"The first thing you notice on picking up this book is the high quality of production. The text, in a mixture of r history, anecdotes, lists and how-to pieces, covers all you could possibly want to know about these lovely Westmacott-designed boats and more, but manages to look very inviting. Did you know, for instance, that Sunbeams have been cruised overnight? The photos and diagrams (including notes on Sunbeam-specific seamanship) are high quality, sometimes breathtaking, and clearly the fruit of some exhaustive research by Peter Nicholson.
The book is divided into two halves: it's a good example of the quality and imagination that has gone into the publishing that 'then' is on matt paper, and 'now' on gloss.
It's these touches that could keep the casual reader turning the pages, as well as the accessibility of Nicholson's conversational prose style, although this casual reader might give some sections, like the rightly exhaustive historical one, a miss.
It's probably a foregone conclusion that every Solent Sunbeam owner will buy one - cost be damned, of course - but this book is tremendous value for such a grand publication."
