See our Class Captain's Welcome.
Contact us and come for a trial sail. Sailing a Sunbeam can change your life.
Hello, I am Ian Stobie Crew Master for the class
Before you ask, I have never sailed a Dinghy in my life but I have raced a yacht
around GB and Ireland. I can tell you now, sailing a Sunbeam is a whole new
wonderful sailing experience. You really learn how to sail fast with no fancy
electronics, just raw feel and racing nous.
If you want to have some fun racing and achieve a high level of competence at the same time, then come and join us!
A Sunbeam (apart from looking quite stunning) is a very sea worthy craft, yes things can get lively in a force 7 whilst in open water. However, on a warm summers Thursday evening racing in Chichester harbour, well it's one of life’s great pleasures.
We have a growing fleet of Sunbeams and a very extensive racing calendar i.e. 100+ races per season. That means we are always looking for new crew, helms and prospective owners with or without deep racing experience. Plus for new owners we have a ready made supply of experience crew for you to team up with.
Many of us come from a diverse background from zero sailing / racing experience to some who jumped off RORC/JOG cruiser racing to others with vast Dinghy racing experience. Even if you have the boat skills, there is always the harbour mud to catch you out. Experience they say you cannot buy, so we are attempting to fast track the acquisition.
We are embarking on various initiatives to enable anyone to gain rapid competence to a level where they feel happy and able to compete with the existing experienced Sunbeamers. As crew master this is my role to help you define and gain the knowledge and/or experience you need to achieve the level that you want.
As part of our crew development programme we have increased our race training sessions and the way we organise the crewing of competing boats to maximise the number of people actively racing. To simplify this process for individual races we have partnered with Club2Class. If you want to race, my job is to help you do that. .
